Why this car is so special.
Having sold new Mercedes for 12 years at Wilmington Motor Cars in Delaware, I was elated when this 1979 Mercedes Benz 300D came in bringing back fond memories. Over the course of my new car sales career, I owned 7 Mercedes diesels. I love the durability and the low cost of maintenance. Not to mention the safety standards keeping my insurance low.
My daughters were attending a private middle school in Delaware and parents had to form a line to pick their children up, as there was no bus service provided. As soon as the car number was called for my old 1985 300 diesel ( of course they could hear it coming a mile away with that loud clackity clack clack clack), they would turn their backs to me, continue talking to their classmates and both make hand gestation's behind their backs for me to move forward in the line. Then they would both proceed to sneak up to the car, open the door from the opposite side and climb in keeping their heads low so as not to be seen in this slow, smokey, loud vehicle. Their shame in being seen in this old Mercedes was quite ironic! It didn't matter that it had 200,000 plus miles on it and just broken in. Fast forward -they were both studying at the University of Delaware. Kendra, my youngest, needed a car to get to class. I gave her my 80s vintage Mercedes diesel. She comes home and exclaims "Mom, you're not going to believe it! All these guys were coming up to me and saying what a cool car I had".
I really believe that Mercedes are built unlike any other car and this 1979 has more safety patents than any cars of today. I remember a TV commercial for a another brand car with a American army tank driving over the roof of the Mercedes. The commercial was quickly taken off the air, because the Mercedes remained intact!
When the young lady approached me to sell her grandfather's car and I noticed that it came from my Alma Mater (at that time called Royal Imports) I jumped at the opportunity to represent this one family owned car with less than 87,000 miles on it. It has been garage kept its entire life and serviced at Mercedes Benz or the legendary Ezio. This is a magnificent example of a naturally aspirated diesel. Of course it has its flaws with some seepage and clearcoat damage of the Anthracite Gray paint where something was put on the back deck lid . The interior Cream MB Tex looks brand new. The dash and wood has no cracks or scratches in it . A binder has all the service records from 1979. This is a difficult car for the granddaughter to part with as she remembers riding in the back seat while her beloved grandfather drove.
